Listserv i.e. ability to submit forum posts by email
Current behavior:
Discussions and collaborations between members can currently only be handled online (within forum or blog pages)
Desired behavior:
Listserv functionality where members can mail-in comments and receive email summaries of all comments
Notes:
1) The biggest challenge is how to enable this without overloading our servers with email traffic. This can ramp up quickly.
2) We are starting the work on forum email notifications, this handles this need at least partially.
Please review results of our analysis and design:

Post your comments/ideas right here. Until we see major disapproval, this is what we will develop in one of future releases.

Yes, please add this functionality. One way to to keep from being overloaded with traffic is to perhaps limit the number of emails per month for an organization, based on size.

I agree with the recent posts about a mobile solution not being a good replacement to listserv capability for our membership.
I'm incredibly frustrated with Wild Apricot in regards to handling this feature request. It seems that users are ignored despite the popularity of this item. And now communication is cut off yet again with the promise of a different solution that can't be discussed further. This request has been around since 2008?!?
My prior comments have been ignored, including the request for a small workaround of the entire text of a post to be included in e-mail notifications. My guess is that this comment will again go unanswered.

I would also add that putting all such communications into a mobile app does nothing to show our organization's vitality to potential members who will be looking at our organization on the web.
Relying on an app that those parties will not install or cannot use simply creates a barrier to entry.

I have to agree wholeheartedly with everything Walt said. A mobile solution is no solution for my organization's user base. We need a simple, straightforward listserv functionality soon in order for Wild Apricot to remain our service provider. As noted by others in this forum, I don't understand why this is difficult for Wild Apricot when other SaaS providers have been able to implement it.

Thanks for the clarification, Dmitriy.
I would strongly encourage you to first design a solution based on the original suggestions to expand forums to provide listserv functionality.
Then you can find more modern ways to implement or extend that forum functionality in the mobile app.
Why do I suggest this? Younger people these days - speaking generally - use texting and messaging apps to communicate. Older folks still use email and many do not take full advantage of smartphones. Lots of people use forums. All of these groups of people are represented among your WA end users.
If you begin a new design based on mobile functionality, you will cut off a large portion of your end user base.
So first fix the shortcomings of the functionality you already have, before doing something entirely new - even if it is more interesting.

I mean that the team I work with (mobile development team) is going to invest resources into solution, which will allow to organize communications with the help of our mobile applications. We are still in the process of forming that solution, so I can't provide more details.

Dmitry, what do you mean by "we mostly think about mobile solution instead of direct implementing listserv"?
Do you mean you are prioritizing resources for the mobile app now and deferring listserv?
Or do you mean that you plan to provide a mobile solution in the place of listserv?

yes, please let us know where this stands....

@Dmitry Smirnov this is basic website forum function that's been around since the advent of the website forum in the 1990s.
I don't see mobile solutions anywhere near the 222 votes and 148 comments (dating YEARS back) asking for listserv.
My suggestion is this: listen to your client feedback and get the basics right first.
Quite frankly my members are having a bit of buyer's remorse over switching to Wild Apricot from ClubExpress because ClubExpress got basic features like these implemented.

We started analysis of solution, which will allow to work with communications in more modern way. We are going to address needs related to working with forums as well. However we mostly think about mobile solution instead of direct implementing listserv.

Is there any update on this? We would really like to implement this on our website as it would be a major bonus for our members!

I, too, would like an update on the status of this feature. Is it still on the roadmap?

Would love an update on this. We moved from another website provider to WA and our #1 membership complaint has been this limited forum functionality. The way it currently works is a huge UX road block from forums being used by our membership, as others have mentioned.
The fear of overloading your servers seems like a false-barrier when your competition has been doing it for decades - which I know because we switched from them (clubexpress) to your platform to only find this limitation is really frustrating our membership.

I agree with the comments below, including the most recent by Robin on 5/24.
Please provide an update and let us know why the full text of the post cannot be included in the e-mail notification that is currently sent. Even if full listserv capability is not planned for rollout, having the full text of the post included in e-mails would go a long way to addressing what has been an issue with many of your users.
Also, communicating the plan would be very helpful. Our organization is planning to pay another vendor to get better functionality and this will involve member re-education about a new process. If something is coming from Wild Apricot, then we can hold off on these plans... being in limbo about what WA is doing impacts us!
Thank you!

Full details of forum post should be in notification email for daily/weekly summaries as well as for immediate notifications.
Having to click through a link and maybe even sign on is a big show stopper in getting my users to look at forum posts. Also getting immediate updates is annoying to my members who complain about too many emails and would prefer to receive daily/weekly summaries.
Finally - this design was published over 2 years ago. When can we expect to see it being delivered?

The Listserv function is something our community association finds essential and Wild Apricot's lack of this functionality is preventing us from making the decision to use WA. The proposed workaround lacks the ability to initiate a conversation (forum) or join a forum without logging on. The tech supports suggestion to use a 3rd part embedded code in our WordPress engine (fill-able JavaScript) is something we will explore; but would prefer WA had the option. Another vote for adding the Listserv function!

What is the current status of this? I read the article referenced by Apricot Kernel on Feb 12, 2016. Design looks great. But 2 years later - when will it be implemented?

Marv Mitchell commented: "Having the ability for members to directly send emails to all or selected groups of members would be a huge benefit to our organization. Please put this on the top of your change list."
Absolutely agree.
We have created groups of members who need to correspond with each other by email and I have suggested finding someone to write code to enable their email addresses to be collected and merged into a new email created in the user's email client (currently you can only do this for individual members by clicking on their displayed email address).
WA support has suggested it "might be possible to get a list of emails by making an API call or parsing a directory page and then pass this list to an email client" and that WA development partners might be able to help: http://www.wildapricot.com/partners.
Would others be prepared to chip in if we can find someone to do the job?
