Change setup of recurring payment for membership levels - Allow member to choose if he wants to pay recurring or not
For membership fees, recurrent credit card billing (ie., auto-renewal) doesn't work the way it does in every other subscription management system. Instead of having two payment options on the membership form (or in my case, since I have five membership levels, TEN payment options), the member should select a level and then be provided an option at the next step (like the manual payment versus online election) that allows the person to select recurrent auto billing. The way you have it set up, its basically unusable (IMHO)

Add an option to allow individuals to authorize their own automatic credit card renewal. What you have now is a global setting which suppresses invoicing and is not easy to use or understand

@Nicole - that was quite loud :)
For now this suggestion is sitting here in the forum, collecting comments and votes. -

@EVGENY YES! PLEASE MAKE AUTO-RENEWALS AN OPTIONAL ITEM. WE HAVE SOME MEMBERS THAT WANT IT AND SOME THAT DON'T. WE ARE IN THE MIDST OF RENEWAL AND IT IS A MADHOUSE AS PEOPLE ARE CALLING OUR OFFICE CONSTANTLY TO COMPLAIN THAT THEY CAN'T OPT-OUT OF AUTO RENEW AT THE TIME OF RENEWAL.

membership auto-renewal

Lisa, currently this is per membership level option and cannot be combined in a single level (allow to pay on a recurring basis or not). I have merged your comment to existing wishlist thread.

What do I do so that when a member goes to renew they can choose to only renew for one year OR the auto renew option? We will loose members if they feel their only option is to auto renew... Honestly it's not even clear that this is what the user should expect, which could really anger some members next year. Please tell me there is a way to let the user pick between one year online renewal or auto online renewal? Thank you.

The short term solution that seems easiest for WA to implement would be to add a "turn it off" button to members in all membership levels that are set to (automatically) establish recurring payments.
This button/option should be available (1) in the initial sign-up/join form, (2) in the member's Profile, and (3) as a macro to embed in automated member emails as well as invoices.

When users are filling out their membership form there should be an option to opt in or out of auto renewal. This is common practice. The current design in WA where the user is forced into enrolling with auto renew and have no idea that after they submit they will have an option to opt out is poor usability and a great way to increase the drop off rate of online registration.

It makes no sense having to create two membership levels for every level, just so people have a choice between one-time and recurring payments.

I think the better approach is to actually solve the issue you mentioned - to allow a level to have both recurring and non-recurring payments.

I presently have 50 membership levels (half of them could be eliminated if we could assign a member to either automatic recurring payments or not without having to create a level for each). Because there are so many levels when once gets to the bottom of the screen with the column totals one can no longer see what the total was for! So could we also have a column header at the bottom of the page as well as at the top.

We have had to set up a "Parallel Universe" of membership levels for those who do not wish to pay by credit card but yet we need to set up recurrent billing for their membership; very confusing and time consuming on our part. Would be much better if within a membership level we as the admin or the member themselves could make that switch back and forth.

I would like you to turn-off the global Recurring feature and provide each user/member with a clickable option on their individual profile to enable recurring payments. The global feature does not work for me because it suppresses the invoicing process on a global scale which means that I must generate individual invoices for the first time. This is unnecessary work for me since not everyone will choose recurring payments. So why place the work on me when each individual person should be able to choose their preference. If they choose recurring payment then next year the system would accommodate the request and I don't need to do anything other than deal with the exceptions (like when the card is no longer valid, etc.).
By the way this does not need to be an all or nothing feature. You could leave the existing feature alone and define it as global but add another option below it that enables the individual member (stand-alone) option to select recurring payment for next year (or next billing cycle).

I would like to see that as well. I like having a recurring payment as an option (and perhaps even a default but I would like it be an option for the member rather than all or nothing for entire member level.

Yes that is correct, if you are in a recurring level and then pay the invoice online the system will automatically setup recurring payments. The member is however free to cancel the recurring payments right after if they want.

The support guide says "When a membership applicant selects a membership level with recurring payments enabled then clicks Confirm, a Pay recurring invoice button will appear instead of a Pay online button."
We interpret that as meaning that, if recurring payments are enabled for a particular membership level, then the member has no choice about whether to use recurring payments or not. Please correct us if we are wrong. We would not want to enable recurring payments if the member has no choice in the matter.
Advice would be appreciated.
Kindest regards,

I agree. There should be two buttons - pay with reoccurring charge and another button to just pay. It really makes no sense to force everyone to do reoccurring or force everyone to not do reoccurring. There should be an option simply available. Hope you put this on the roadmap.

I would add our wish for having recurring payments as an option within a membership, so duplication of levels would be unnecessary. We have three membership levels that have to be duplicated, plus a couple that don't need both options.

I second this request - we would really like this functionality, too. Any idea if/when it might be available?
In the meantime, what do people do? I don't like the idea of having two membership types for each level (one recurring and one non-recurring) because it makes searching, event setup, etc. more complicated... Other options I can think of are to have them all be just recurring (will we lose people who don't want to auto-renew?) or not use recurring (then we're chasing everyone down whenever they expire and don't respond to the emails)...
Any suggestions would be appreciated!

That makes total sense, thanks for comments.
