Username vs. Email. Allow login and self-service operations for members without email
Although the last update of WA software allowed site admins to create membership entries without email addresses, this only addresses a small part of the problem.
We want to move away from costly site admin intervention, ideally new members will create their own entries and we will only validate them once dues have been paid.
This means that we really do still need to allow:
(1) members to sign up without email addresses and
(2) members to sign up with duplicate email addresses.
I assume that (2) will have to mean moving away from having the username == email address and the introduction of proper unique usernames for login purposes. This in itself will be a very welcome addition.

Hi Supporters,
Thank you for all the feedback and support for this suggestion. After reviewing all the comments and related feature suggestions, we have decided to separate it into multiple ideas and close the original request. For more details, see our explanation below.
Based on the original request and all the comments we believe this suggestion is trying to combine and solve the following problems:
1) some members want to be part of an organization, but they don’t have an email address
2) some members don’t have a personal email address and use a shared email with someone that is also a member/contact
After careful consideration, we have decided that we won’t be able to support the first scenario in the foreseeable future, for both practical (e.g. additional manual work for admins) and security reasons (e.g. no way to recover an account). However, the second scenario (supporting members with shared/family emails) and other related requests are something we do plan on working on.
So, while we are closing the original request, we welcome your support and feedback on the following:
Family/child memberships

Multiple Membership Subscriptions

Allow Renewal Invoice Generation without Emailing
https://forums.wildapricot.com/forums/308932/suggestions/10583355
Note, we have also renamed the original suggestion to reflect the points covered in the first scenario.
Thanks again, and we look forward to your feedback.

Has there been any progress on this issue? I'm checking back in as I promised! :) Thanks for the attention.

This would be handy for certain types of our memberships. For example our Firm Membership where the actual member changes over time (and the associated email address) as people come and go from the firm. And for our sponsorships, the same is true where the actual people who are members may change but the company info stays the same.

In our organization we have many husband and wife members that would prefer to share one email address. We also have members that have several types of memberships with us. This creates the problem of having our members create additional email addresses soley for the purpose of having a Unique User Name.
I wish that User Names could be unique and Email addresses could be attached to more than a single member.
Thanks for listening.

Andria, sorry, we have not spent any time on this particular issue in a while. Plan to start looking it closer in the second half of the year, particularly from the bundles angle.

Has there been any progress on this issue on the past year? In December the update allowed the email address field to be empty, which takes us one step closer, but leaves the big hole where those members without an email address (or those who just don't want to give it out) can't log in. The ability to use the member number or any other field in conjunction or separate from the email address would alleviate many issues we are also dealing with, specifically in regards to couples. We are unable to use bundles just for the main reason that (usually the older folks...which just happens to be 99.9% of our members) there is often only one email address in a household, company, etc.
Any update would be greatly appreciated!

I'd like to see the ability to log in with e-mail address OR membership number. The people who ran membership before me used a MS Works 5.0 spreadsheet that was horribly inaccurate and missing lots of data like e-mails. All members have received their new WA membership number and password via snail mail, but cannot log into the website until I input their e-mail address. That is an extra step for them and me. Using the number would get them right in and they could add the e-mail to their profile.
Another related issue is couples with a bundle membership, but only one e-mail address between them (usually the older folks). Can't have duplicates so one account cannot be managed online. If they could log in with the number, that would eliminate this issue.

Dmitry,
My problem was simply as described above, we have potential members without websites or email addresses who we sign up so that we can give them a web presence in many cases - small restaurant owners are a case in point. We meet many prospects like this at exhibitions and workshops and would very much like NOT to have to do the sign up ourselves, after all it's much quicker and easier the member enters his details not us.

Ian, thanks for the reply. My primary focus is not to jump to a specific solution before we fully understand the problem/scenarios. (We have done too much of that in the past!).
I understand the issue about family members - we do have a thread dedicated to solving that. I am still not clear on the other scenario - people who would want to sign up online without disclosing their email. If you have any other comments on this, I would appreciate hearing them - and I hope other forum readers will pitch in and comment here.

They are indeed two different scenarios but very closely related IMO.
We hold events and attend exhibitions and workshops where we always hope to sign up new members via a laptop running our site. Unbelievable some of these prospects still don't have websites or email addresses (or at least business emails and they may not be willing to disclose private ones).
I have also seen a lot of comments on these forums about the problems of signing up family members under one address - being a business org. that is not a huge problem to us but is to others and having the facility to duplicate email addresses would be very useful to us.
However I do understand that moving from keying on unique email address to the more generic user selectable user name may be quite a challenge;-)

I see these as two separate scenarios and would like to address them separately. Let's focus on the 1) here.
Our original analysis of requests showed this was mainly driven by clients who had old records/non-tech-savvy members who did no have email addresses. They still wanted to keep those members in the database. Thus, we provided a way for admins to add/import records without email.
You are talking about online self-service and my current thinking is that everyone who would want to use online self-service would have an email (even to reset his password if forgotten!). What do you think?

I also would like to see WA allow duplicate email addresses for members of a bundle as many of our members share a family email address for personal emails. Alternatively, we would like only the bundle administrator to be required to provide an email address for the bundled membership because we do not want to send emails to the bundle members.
