Listserv i.e. ability to submit forum posts by email
Current behavior:
Discussions and collaborations between members can currently only be handled online (within forum or blog pages)
Desired behavior:
Listserv functionality where members can mail-in comments and receive email summaries of all comments
Notes:
1) The biggest challenge is how to enable this without overloading our servers with email traffic. This can ramp up quickly.
2) We are starting the work on forum email notifications, this handles this need at least partially.
Please review results of our analysis and design:

Post your comments/ideas right here. Until we see major disapproval, this is what we will develop in one of future releases.

Yes, it was (as it says on our Roadmap page, the schedule can change any time). We hit a snag during implementation of this item and had to reschedule our resources. It is still very important item, we will get back to it as soon as we can.

Has this request been downgraded as I no longer see it scheduled for July? We are very much looking forward to this enhancement. Thank you

Does this mean that we are closer to development of this feature?

This will not be in scope of suggested change. Most probably, I will archive this thread as soon as we release what we planned and we will be reconsidering new suggestions after that.

This also is extremely important to our association. I would like to add my voice to get it higher on the Roadmap.
The one other feature I'd find very important is the ability for a member to add additional email addresses of persons who can also be on the forum. These would typically be employees who also want to read and contribute to the forum discussion.
A simpler alternative is to allow the possibility of a different email address for forum traffic. For example, if the Member's publicly-shown email is "info@member.com", they'd have an option to use a different email address such as "forum@member.com" to send and receive email.
In our association, forum contributors often are not the main contacts (top management) for a member company. The contributors are often the technical or marketing people.

This issue is extremely important for us. The use of an external list serve is a clumsy solution, and creates extra work in maintenance. Having the email discussion available on the website as a forum would be an added benefit. I completely agree that people will not login to the website to read for a whole host of reasons - slow internet, mobile device, website blockage etc - in addition to taking the extra time. Other sites have this feature where it works wonderfully. I would hate to have go elsewhere to get this as there is some other really great stuff in Wild Apricot.
How soon can this be implemented?
Cheers,

The closest thing to what you're asking is this one - http://forums.wildapricot.com/forums/308932-wishlist/suggestions/8825587-ability-to-submit-forum-posts-by-email-to-use-fo
We've already designed it and posted our suggested solution in the thread comments.

Wild Apricot Team,
We would like to be able to set up email lists for teams and sub-groups of members that are usable by non-administrators - e.g., TeamA@domain.org, TeamB@domain.org 1995cohort@ergies.org .
Our only option right now is for these teams to create out-of-system email listservs (e.g., google groups) - which are then not updated when people update their information in Wild Apricot.
thanks,
Alumni Group

I just need to add my support. While email is on its way out, forums are long gone, and expecting people to use them is trying to pretend that the world doesn't move on.

Please, please, PRETTY PLEASE??? This is my biggest disappointment with WA. I just migrated our site from GroupSpaces and even they had a listserv function. Actually, they had a great listserv where you could even email member lists (subgroups) of members. My members won't use something they have to log into (forums). I can guarantee that. It's hard enough to get them to update their profile. It would be MUCH better if they were opted in to the forum emails by default too. But this email listserv is a must have on my list.

Just putting my two cents in on the need for this as well.
Every time we have had a new web developer offer his services for the group he has put in forums, the forums have died, and we have gone back to using Yahoo! Groups listservs. This has happened three times now. After this latest failure we may be looking at Meetup. To maintain interest in our organization we need push content where the end user can decide the terms of his participation. If the content is not in front of him in his email notification he will not be sufficiently intrigued to participate in the discussion; he also usually won't participate if he can't respond by hitting the reply button.

I totally ditto this comment! My users have also dropped off, every single time we've tried. Realize forums are more secure, less load, but if our members do not ENGAGE with them, they are of no value at all! We need our members to be popping in and out, talking all the time. If we want the forum to be secure login only, we could perhaps have that as an option. But the ability to simply REPLY without having to log onto a website is definitely huge.

Members are seeing the ability to use their mobile device to post into forums on various sites and are requesting to have total email usability into Wild Apricot Forum. Really want to serve my member base. Have been researching this for a few weeks. Does Word Press has this functionality. Are there clients of Wild Apricot who also pair this member tool with Word Press?

Our sailing club has used Googlegroups and we have just migrated our membership and website to WA. The discussion forum with immediate email notification essentially does the same as Googlegroups or Yahoo Groups but I am struggling to persuade our members to change. I see two major obstacles which if addressed by WA would reduce this barrier.
1 The need to login. We don't like the idea of people staying logged in because it leaves personal information vulnerable. It would be nice if it was possible to remain logged in just the forum or just view the post that you received an email notification.
2 Members have to subscribe to a forum and the admin cannot change this. We would prefer to subscribe everyone and then they elect to unsubscribe as in all other email notifications.

Our garden club of 360 members uses Yahoo Groups.
As the moderator it is pain to administer, however, actually works very well.
If a member is registered they may send an email with attachments etc. to the group.
Replies may be to the Group or just the sender.
Summary options are available.
Its virtue is that you don't have to log on or go and look.
It would be really convenient, and I would venture a great addition, to have the same in WA.

I've spent the afternoon evaluating WA for one of my groups with c 200 members.
Was looking pretty much like a done deal until I discovered this 'feature'. There is absolutely no way I can consider WA without a proper email discussion list. With the ubiquity of mobile devices, email posting is more important than ever.

By the way, currently, when you compose email, you can choose specific group as recipient - and system will send email to all group members. Can this help?
