Moving and Merging Forum Posts [6464]
To moderate our forums we'd like to take new topics that are really comments to existing topics and move them from being a unique topic to a comment of an existing topic. We'd like to retain the original poster information in the move. Is this possible in the existing forum structure? If not, is this an administrative feature you would consider adding to the service?
Released in 5.2

"Moving and Merging Forum Posts" implemented in 5.2 release on December 10, 2014. See 5.2 release description http://help.wildapricot.com/display/DOC/Release+5.2 for details.

No, this is for moving forum topics only, not blog.
Can you give more details on blog workflow you mentioned? Do you want to move old forum topics to some blog post? Or you mean creating some digest of old blog posts?

Will this include the ability to move older posts into monthly blog archives? I didn't see this specifically in the 5.2 Roadmap descriptions.

As I’ve said before, we are implementing Move and merge forum posts functionality in upcoming release - you will be able to keep your forums more organized. Now you can sneak preview in how this feature will work.
5.2. release is currently planned for beginning of December 2014 and contains number of other enhancements. You can always track current progress in Roadmap thread http://forums.wildapricot.com/forums/308932-wishlist/suggestions/8827717-roadmap-2015-plans-releases-expected-dates .
Feel free to post your comments here.

Ian,
In v5.2 we plan to implement moving and merging forum topics and moving single forum replies (to another topic or split reply to a new topic).
For now we decided not to go into splitting topics (by splitting I mean selecting several replies and creating new topic out of them), but this can be achieved my moving single replies several times.
As for automatic forum workflows, could you elaborate this more please? How do you plan using it? Why do you want to delete old topics?
This is being designed now. The actual release depends on a number of things and this why we cannot estimate.
Just checking on this item again - I see this listed as a 5.2 deliverable, but I'd like some additional clarity as to the 'what' as well as 'when' please. In addition to actually being able to manage threads (move, join, split) will there be some way to more easily delete ? Ideally perhaps be able to set some rules to auto-delete old posts in some cases (anything older than 6 months as an example) or to be able to archive old posts elsewhere ?
Thx !

Seems like this has been on people's wishlist since 2009. I would think that 5 years would have been enough time for this to become a reality. We have elderly people who do not really know how to use a forum and they keep putting threads in places they should not. Are there plans to make these changes soon?

Having managed another forum in the past, I believe this should be something that the Wild Apricot team looks into implementing. Forum topics can get cluttered sometimes with things being posted incorrectly. As the moderator, I don't want to just delete the thread, as they can be very valuable. By the same token, they aren't very valuable if people cannot find them, due to them being in the wrong place.

Yes, please implement these advanced forum features as soon as possible! Social interaction is SO important in keeping our members active and engaged, as well as in recruiting new members. The forum is the heart of the organization's community!
Our forum MUST be flexible and immediately useful to everyone...Without the ability to change incorrect placement of posts, or improve the topic structure as we grow, we are crippled. The forum will quickly become messy, unappealing and difficult to navigate and understand, and we will be considered outdated and unable to provide the best service to our members.
Wild Apricot has developed so many vital and amazing functionalities, please PLEASE realize that a more modern forum is probably one of the most important issues you should focus on!

Currently:
When a forum is created, all topics and replies cannot be moved from forum to forum. From time to time a topic might be posted in one forum which might be might appropriate in another forum. As well, forums might also be redundant and should be consolidated, or a post may spawn a whole new conversation.Desired:
1) The ability to move a topic and its replies from one forum to another. This would send an email to all people who have posted in it that the topic has been moved, and possibly leave a note in the forum that the topic has moved.2) The ability to join threads. This would moves all the topics and replies from one forum into another one. It would then delete the existing forum or close one forum and leave a not there informing people of the move.
3) Split a thread at a certain point so that the post becomes a new thread.

Yes, this is exactly what we need to do, too. So often, our members drift off-topic, and the webmaster has to start a new, more appropriate topic and split the replies by the messy method of cutting and pasting.

I would like to be able to delete a posting. Perhaps i don't koow how to do it other than delete all the replies one by one. Lacking a ForSale capability, the forum works but I and users need a way to remove the original post when the item sells.

I would also appreciate the ability to move a post from one forum to another, thanks.

I was just looking for how to information in the on line docs on how to move a topic and was very disappointed to find out that I could not. I would like to see this feature added to your software,

Really, this is an important one. Please try to address it early in 2012, then.
It comes up too often that comments or an entire thread should be moved to a different forum, where it belongs.
Thanks.

Again - unfortunately no chance to have it in 2011

Vesta, unfortunately it will be a while - all our resources are tied up with other enhancements.

Yep. I posted a wishlist item about this general issue:
Our members have complained to us that the forum is not useful for a variety of reasons, and this is one of a few issues that we identified as problematic (along with the time stamp issue, and no search feature - for recent posts, e.g.). We're considering moving our forum to vBulletin or something, but I just hate to move any of our functionality out of WA because of the link to current membership records.
Any idea of how long a forum upgrade will take would be much appreciated.

It’s time for me to jump in again! I’m happy to see there are few more customers expressing the need for the ability to move and/or archive forums/blogs. I am still surprised that this topic has such little interest. While the continuing changes/updates in WA fantastic; it is still my opinion this topic needs resolution as soon as possible.
We use both the forum and blog functions built into WA and do not want to use third-part solutions. However, without the ability to move forum and blog topics (keeping everything organized) all is becoming disorganized and confusing. There are topics we want to move to a historical location; off the main topic pages. Albeit we are only a few that consider this a priority; please consider in a near-future update.
Thanks…

Moderators need to be able to move posts and topics around when they're started in the wrong subforum. I'm sure there are other mod enhancements that would be useful, but that one has been really challenging for us.
Thanks.
