Change setup of recurring payment for membership levels - Allow member to choose if he wants to pay recurring or not
For membership fees, recurrent credit card billing (ie., auto-renewal) doesn't work the way it does in every other subscription management system. Instead of having two payment options on the membership form (or in my case, since I have five membership levels, TEN payment options), the member should select a level and then be provided an option at the next step (like the manual payment versus online election) that allows the person to select recurrent auto billing. The way you have it set up, its basically unusable (IMHO)

This would be great. We too have multiple membership levels and would like to offer recurring payments as an option. However, changing our levels to recurring payment and then forcing the members who do not wish this option to go in and unselect it is a burden we do wish to put on them. Duplicating our membership levels and offering a recurring payment option and a non-recurring payment option would look overwhelming and potentially confusing. It would be best if the member choose their level and the could choose whether or not they wished to be enrolled in recurring payments.

It would be great if, within a membership level, we could allow people to choose to pay all at once or with recurring payments, instead of having to set up a separate member level to accommodate recurring payments.

I have voted for this previously as we too have this issue in our organization. Please, WA, give it more thought. I am not sure that number of votes is an adequate way to go about "fixing" issues. Because we are the ones dealing with people's money, we need this solution quickly! Thank you.

I agree with Michael Ware's comment. This is a HUGE problem for us in our organization, and our members are quite frankly put off by being forced into recurring payments.

I'm not convinced Wild Apricot grasps fully their customer's concerns on this matter. While I couldn't quantify it, I would be willing to bet the overwhelming majority of their clients are compromised almost completely of volunteers, rather than paid staff.
What volunteers really mean is the orgs don't have enough income to afford paid staff, or they would. Thus, income derived from membership dues are most organizations lifeblood.
...And what is their potential memberships first impression of any org that won't let you opt in to recurring payments, or opt out of recurring payments? Unsophisticated for the purposes of the inability to opt-in, and deceitful of those from which you can't opt-out.
This isn't a scrap of the entire system. We're asking for a few lines of code here...
Pretty please with sugar on top, REPAIR this systemic problem and do so immediately.
The idea that my membership director is going to have to communicate this to the 6000 members we intend on adding this year, OR the backlash from folks that attempt to become members, feel as if they're stuck in a ponzi scheme, leave and trash talk our vital org from their poor experience is equally infuriating and disappointing.
I truly don't believe Wild Apricot recognizes this as the total debacle it is. WA offers us all the idea we can 'manage' our membership and they provide tools to grow and support our membership. To many of us, this small problem has manifested itself as a wart on our noses. If WA can't focus time on this to offer things as simple as an "OPT OUT of recurring payments" when we set our membership up in that fashion, that strikes me a basic failure to provide the core needs of all our organizations.
We NEED this repaired, pronto.

I am stunned that this has been an issue and a request going back to 2015. Now, five years later there is no movement?? This is a real problem for us. Please, please make this a priority. We have 3 member levels with monthly recurring payments, and that is working very well. But we have 7 member levels with annual payments - we need to give members in those levels the option to choose whether they want to have recurring payments. Otherwise we are looking at creating an additional 7 new member levels. How confusing will that be for people?

We are getting angry members due to the recurring payment set up - as they have to check to NOT have recurring payments each year.
Suggest Options like other Associations use for payment:
___One time pay/charge my credit card one time only
___Continuous pay/charge my credit card yearly by the due date -

"The way you have it set up, its basically unusable (IMHO)". I agree! This puts the onus on the website admins to sort out who wants to have recurring payments, and who doesn’t, then requiring additional ‘levels’ to work around this incomplete feature. Too much.
It should be a check box to enable individuals to select recurring payments or not.
We have just switched to AffiniPay to work with the app WA wants everyone to use-it should be a working feature with that app at a minimum.
It's hard to believe that this has been on the wish list since 12/2010 and you still haven't added this option. Unacceptible. -

Hear hear! We should not have to set up a separate membership level just to have different reminder emails for people who have elected to renew manually or automatically.

When signing up, folks should have the option of whether they want to set up automatic renewal or not instead of just only being able to go in and cancel it after the fact. It just seems really shady and spammy to force them to sign up for automatic renewal, but it is convenient for some members.

We've been told that the only way to have members choose whether to setup recurring payments or not is to have seperate membership levels for single payments and recurring payments. This is unfeasible for a number of reasons.
Please allow members to choose a member level and then choose whether they want recurring payments or to be invoiced each payment cycle.

Not having the ability for members to opt in or opt out of recurring payments can be an issue for the organization. Membership is always an option for any organization and having a system that once activated there is no indication for the ultimate end user, the member, to self direct their involvement can lead to bitterness and distrust. I have had to deal with a similar situation using PayPal and not knowing that the membership payments would be recurring and some members did resent the lack of option and knowledge.
Tech support's suggestion of having alternate level options for recurring and non recurring is a bandaid at best. Add the lack of ability to have recurring donations and there was little reason for my organization to choose Wild Apricot/Affinipay as our credit card processor.
I want to understand the reasoning for not having an opt in/opt out radio button when initiating and renewing memberships and why no ability to have recurring donations. Both would be very helpful for your clients with memberships and fundraising. If someone could respond to kelly@ncsfreedom.org with the company's reasoning, it is apparently this way with all payment options.Thank you;

Yes, please make auto renew a payment option to be selected - and not an all or nothing.

this is a huge shortcoming of WA, and makes me want to switch to a different CRM software. members should be able to edit their auto- or non-renewal status in their membership profile. now i need 16 different levels to accomodate...

We are also in need of each level having the auto renew option. Some of members want it and some do not want to auto renew. They need to be able to choose.

"how" you pay should just be an option to the Membership Level, not an entirely separate level.

Dont force us to create two identical membership levels for recoccuring payments (one with and one without the forced option) and make it a check box / choice inside each membership. It should be a function of paying not selecting a membership type.

When we enable autorenew, we want to give our members the CHOICE to check a box for autorenewal rather than forcing them into autorenewal and then making them log back in and disable it if they don't want it. Forcing autorenewal on people leaves people with a very bad taste in their mouth, and is akin to the way magazine subscriptions work. Basically, consumers don't like this! They want to be given the choice. Please, please consider adding this option. Thank you.

I would Also like to see an option within a level rather than having two levels (one that auto-renews and the other that doesn't). We currently have eight membership levels - which we then have to double and have 16 categories. It would be much cleaner if the customer simply had a check box to select when signing up for a given level. Thanks.
