New Gadget: See who is currently logged in
Desired:
A gadget where members who are currently logged into your site are displayed.
There would be a list of those who are logged in, with links to their profile pages. Members would have the ability to indicate if they want to be included in this gadget, and for those that do their field-level privacy settings would be respected.
This could be used to show visitors to the site, or logged in members (by putting it in a member restricted area), who is currently on the site which can help encourage communication between people (by using the Member contact form, mailing them directly, or forums and blog comments).

I would love to be able to see how many and who are currently logged in. Some of our members login from a home device and do not log off for months? weeks? (no way to tell). It would help to tell member activity online. (Also not a bad idea for members to know when an admin is logged on as OP posted.)

It would be nice to have a place where the other members online are listed.

That's not so. It has several uses unrelated to immediate chat. For one, it shows members at a glance how busy the site is, and who tends to be online at the same times that I am (for example, if I am always online on Sunday mornings and so are Joe and Sally), then I get a sense of community without ever chatting. It also shows me if someone with whom I have been collaborating is available - maybe I owe him something on a project, and just seeing his name reminds me to get to it.
I use this feature on a Drupal site and it has been useful and popular.

Online chat would be nice, with configurable chat rooms. I'd love to have a widget that could be placed in the header or footer (or near the menu) that displays either the count of people that are currently visiting the site (sessions) or the count of members currently logged in. The count of members could optionally link to a page with the list of members.

I think this would only make sense if/when we have online chat between members.

I too would like to be able to view a dynamic list of which members (particularly administrators) are signed in, on demand.
