Restricted access to documents and images (member only files)
Current behavior:
If users have a direct link to a file, they will have the ability to download it (i.e. page permissions are not inherited by the files on those pages)
Desired behavior:
Restrict folders and the files in those folders by membership/administrative/group level
Hi, supporters!
We are excited to announce the launch of the “Restricted access for folders” feature. It is currently available for use and we are closing the wishlist thread. Thank you for your patience and feedback that help us to make this feature most useful for you.
Here’s how it works:
- You now have the ability to set permissions on folders. All files and subfolders inside are automatically assigned the new access level.
- When a new file is uploaded into this folder or sub-folder, it is automatically assigned the same level of access.
- Within the restricted folder, the administrator is still able to change the access level for individual files and subfolders.
- The new functionality is also available in the Insert resource dialog.

Agree with both comments, Ian Sinclair. How is it possible that this isn't already a feature?
Because it isn't, my organization is considering a move soon. They'd mistakenly thought all this time that "logging in" for access meant their items were secure.

The reason this feature is not getting more votes is that people who need it, like us, have either chosen other platforms that provide it, or are planning to move to other platforms very soon.

Good Lord! How is it possible that this is not already a basic feature?

I've looked over the design solution and this looks like exactly what we need and asked for. I want my board members to access minutes and financial statements on the website. Currently, we have a board member "group" and it looks like this would give us the ability to give that group access, even it they are not admins.

Very good comment, we will keep this in mind.

I think the design solution looks to be fine, but I have one concern about the transition to the new solution.
We have hundreds of documents in the Resource folder, with many in sub-folders. Lots of these documents contain URL hyperlinks to other documents in the resources folder/sub-folders.
Ideally therefore the solution needs to permit the application of restricted access to the existing folder structure, as otherwise we will face a mammoth editing task to correct all the links if the folder structure or names are changed.
All the best
Colin

I just voted for this feature! We recently evaluated and adopted Wild Apricot for our organization (2nd largest women's org in Indiana) and we kept saying, "This is just too good to be true!" I'm happy to say, that everything you promised is everything we got! And this one feature is the ONLY uh-oh we found.

Personally I think this is an absolute basic requirement of any system that claims to provide restricted access to groups of users. It cannot possibly be that difficult to implement, and candidly we believe it should have been implemented at the outset, not as a 'patch'.
Because of the lack of this feature we already have several 'restricted' documents in wide circulation on the public Internet. In fact other public forums even provide links to our 'restricted' information on WA. The only way we can correct this in the interim is to change the URL by changing file names, which also causes major issues for us as our documents have lots of cross linking.
Come on WA, you can do better than this.

Colin

For this to jump, we need votes. So far it's pretty high in the list, but not the highest.

This is one of the absolute most important features that is missing from WA.
It should jump to the top of the list.
Thanks. -

We require the ability to prevent search engines from seeing our content on Wild Apricot in protected areas.
Please add our vote to putting this capability into your roadmap.
Thanks

We would like to be able to set security in the file area. Administration is fairly granular and we have to allow some of our area administrators more access than we would like. We also have some links from our public website back to the file area and would like to make sure our members are logged in through Wild Apricot before they can access these files.
