Option to disable names in the directory
No names should show in the Directory until a name is typed in the search box. Our members do not like everyone's names appearing immediately when you open Directory.

Closing as there is no clarification for long time.

To clarify: you want to show search box and do not show members list on the page. Only after searching some specific name. Something like this?
I can suggest 'Site search' gadget as a workaround. You can setup it to search only profiles. The result will not look like directory, but solve your case.Katya,
