Agree 1000% on this. If you have a State field, and it's effectively unlimited, entering "VA" vs "Virginia" will mess up any search based on it.

Yes! We need to be able to set character limits in any field.

Has anything been done about ability to limit characters in certain fields? One client asked me today if we could limit the "About" (description) multi line field so the membership directory (when we print it) wouldn't have member descriptions that were too long. Thanks!

There has been no progress on this. We will post here once it's allocated into a release - there is no current plan for this yet.

As part of the redesign of the member directory in WA 3.3 the "directory listing field" membership field that was limited to 500 chars has been lost and replaced by a multi-line text field with a huge 3,000 char limit.

This 500 char limit was very useful - we could limit our members to around 4 lines of text to describe their company in this field on the basic member directory page and then let them have free rein (up to the full 3,000 chars) on their full page display.Perfect.

In this way we could exercise some control over the display on the member directory list.

We would very much like this size-limited text field reintroduced, either as a fixed size - 500 chars is ideal for our use - or more flexibly with a user selectable size.

I have come across other requests where people need to constrain fields in a similar fashion. So it sounds like the best solution would be to have an option on text fields like "Limit to [ ] characters"

Would love to see votes and comments on this thread.

It would also be very, very useful to be able to limit the multiline text entry to a number of characters maybe 1,000 so that the size of member generated entries e.g. company descriptions etc, can be prevented from growing to unmanageable sizes.

The text fields available when creating event registration forms are fixed lengths. We need, for several pieces of data, to be able to specify a fixed number of characters in text fields.

For example, we allow event registrants to specifiy a name on their race bibs. The names can be no longer than 10 characters, however the text fields available are much longer that that.

I will be creating a few wish list items such as this one requesting more choices on existing and new fields types for event registration forms.

We do not have functionality like this built-in, sorry.
