Allow to customize Upcoming Events Gadget - choose if to display Date, start time, end time, location...
The Upcoming Events Gadget is a great tool for attracting interest to multiple events in a compact way. It could be more useful with a little more flexibility.
The gadget always displays date, start time and location. Please allow us to choose which of these are displayed: Date, start time, end time, location, and (if it doesn't delay this happening) the first n lines of the event Description (with a "More ..." link at the end).
Almost all our events are at the same location, and the location of the rest is obvious. So displaying the location is just a distraction.
(And incidentally, please make location a non-required field in events. Some events don't have one; some don't need to state it. )
Can be done using Theme overrides functionality – by fixing HTML code in the gadget templates. But I’ll be collecting comments to see if suggested user-friendly functionality needed by others.

It would be nice if we could suppress the "switch to calendar view" button.

Our group very much wants the opportunity to add weekdays to the display. That particular information made handy in summary displays such as with the Upcoming Events gadget is of notable use to our members. And, my boss says "get that feature!"

The configuration options for this gadget are far too limited, making the gadget virtually a liability rather than a feature. Right now, by default and without any configuration options, it shows Title, Start Date and Location.
Our members find the start date exceptionally confusing. Yes, despite the fact that the heading says "Upcoming Events" and despite the fact that they can click through and see the event details, including start and end date.
It would be nice if we could pick which fields from the upcoming event are displayed in the gadget. Or at least provide an option to only display the event title...which would force a user to click through for ALL the details.
In the mean time, I've had to put this hideous NOTE immediately below the gadget....
NOTE: The dates listed above are the START date. To see the END date, click through to the event details. In most cases, the END date is also the registration deadline. My only other option is to ditch the entire gadget (which defeats the easy dynamic benefit of the WA gadgets) and manually manage the content on the page. This starts to dilute the cost/benefit of using WA.
I'm glad to see that there is a possible solution using Theme Overrides, but there's also a lot of room for major error by using overrides.

We use the event gadget to display a list of upcoming events. Members cannot see if the event still has available seats until they click on an event and see the details.
We'd like to be able to change the event title to a different color or to add a text message indicating that the capacity has been reached. -

The "upocming Events" - to allow for public view of name of event only... ability to suppress location / individulal names etc.

A calendar has to have the timing of events, start and finish and maybe how many hours

Upcoming Events List could be so much more useful by simply adding finish time & Locaton

Have an event that meets weekly for six weeks. For upcoming week 2 the gadget displays "session 1 of 5" I think it would more accurately say "session 2 of 6"

I just want to stop it displaying the time when I have a multi-day event. The time, displayed with (UTC +11 Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne), is an ugly distracting mess.

Workaround when a location is unwanted but mandatory is add a period (.) character. It is almost invisible.

Bob, I do this by putting a link "More ..." right under the Upcoming events gadget. The link points to our events calendar page, but it could also point to a page with a longer Upcoming events gadget.
This is not as snazzy as having the upcoming events list expand in place but it does provide the "More" functionality, and past events on the events calendar.

I would like the user to have buttons to show more events or past events. Also, I would like to be able to show events that are within the next D days, not just the next N events.

This would be very helpful. All our events are at the same location, so it looks redundant to list the location over and over again.

Walt - in themes override you can download zip file for your current theme and there you will see gadgets templates, including for event summary. It's quite simple if you have HTML knowledge. Otherwise, it's not easy and won't be able to explain it here. You can, alternatively, post a question on out Designers forum where someone may help you.

Can you provide an example for this Theme override in the Help for this gadget?
Could this method be used to display the first few lines of the event description in this gadget?

I notice when I go to my event's page and look at the summary of events that the price of the events is not shown unless one clicks on show details. This could be confusing as if people click on register they won't realize there was a charge until he very end of the process.

Currently, you can easily workaround this by using Theme overrides functionality and changing HTML templates of the gadget.
