Database for things that members own

I have been tasked with adding a special database to our Wild Apricot site.

We need to list details of the boats that our members own and I would dearly
like them to be able to update the info on their boat themselves (it will
save me a lot of work!).

I would like to have quite a large number (around 30) customisable fields,
some with free text entry and some with drop down menu choices.

I need to add at least one photo, preferably more, to each record.

It needs to be searchable on any field.

There would ideally be a link between the boat and its current owner but there must
be provision for transferring a boat to another person : new, existing or non
member. I think this would need to be an administrator only job.

According to WA tech support (Jim Sympathy) this could be achieved by adding 'boat' related fields to a members profile but this would create problems when a boat is sold.

I can't believe that there are not other organisations that use WA that don't have a similar requirement (far too many negatives in that sentence!)

        I have a very similar need. We would like to create a database where a single contact could register informaiton about the dogs they own. This would be a one-to-many relationship since one member might own several dogs they own. We would also like to track show information about each dog, so again this would be a one-to-many relationship since any given dog could have many show records.

        Thanks for the suggestion - we've been thinking about this for some time but haven't come to any conclusion yet. From your points above I can see one scenario - keeping database of boats (or, generally speaking - any type of item) that members themselves can update, add new items, delete old ones, etc.

        This is somewhat similar to membership database itself
        * form with fields need to be defined (= membership fields)
        * users need to be able to add new boats (= membership application)
        * users need to be able to update boat profile (= login and update own profile)
        * users need to be able to search (= membership directory)

        This is quite a change in the system but I like the general idea of having that - not just for boats but for any kind of items.

        Any other has comments on this? Any real life examples except boats that can benefit this kind of change in the system?
