Provide a 'subscribe to our newsletter' at the same time new contacts enter their email address on the sign up page.
Rather than log in and visit a subscription gadget, the new contact can check a box right after they enter their email address. This would be ideal. Very few new contacts will log in and search for the 'subscribe to our newsletter' gadget elsewhere on the website.
