worthing and adur chamber of commerceAn error occurred while saving the comment iant commentedIt would be very useful if the event registration code could be enhanced to do the following:-
(1) Have the option to be visible only to certain membership levels instead of always visible to the whole world
(2) Be limited to a number of uses. i.e. I would like to issue a code that can be used say 10 times and then invalidated.
(3) Be able to use multiple codes simultaneously. i.e. If I issue 3 different codes - secret1, secret2 and secret3 to different membership levels, the registration code validation function will accept any of them and if (2) above is active decrement the usage count of the appropriate one.

An error occurred while saving the comment iant commentedWell to my way of thinking it really doesn't matter HOW we get into problems, all that matters is that we can recover QUICKLY and EASILY.
I have had problems with my own incompetence, M$ IE8, Firefox 3.x.x and the WA Edit HTML box. The result is always the same however - I want to reload a webpage from a backup. Now we are based in the UK so if I screw up at 8am, with the best will in the world I don't think I'm going to get much response from WA for 6 or so hours. So my website could be in bits for that long.
Worse than that, I don't think I'm alone in trying to make "serious" updates over weekends so now we can be looking at 50+ hours before I can recover. Not acceptable.
Others round the world will of course be even worse off.
The same argument applies to Member Database problems. If it's screwed up for whatever reason, I need to be able to restore QUICKLY.

worthing and adur chamber of commerceAn error occurred while saving the comment iant commentedJust last week I have had a problem with a "corrupted" web page header that made me think once again that we do really need a way of backing up our web pages
I spent quite a time trying to correct matters - if I could have just done a "page restore" from a locally stored, user initiated backup, I could have investigated the problem with less urgency.
So a web page backup facility definitely gets our vote.

An error occurred while saving the comment iant commentedI would like to add our vote to this one - the basic implementation as you outlined back in May 2008 would be a great start.
As we near 2011 is there any sign of this moving to the roadmap and being scheduled for development?

An error occurred while saving the comment iant commentedAs background, I've been using WA for around a year now, site #1 is just going through its first "restyle" and I've just started development on site #2 for another client. I’m not a web designer by trade.
Both the suggestions in the initial post would be most welcome, especially the "Web Designer Guide" idea. This would be a great time saver.
Whilst I agree with mitchiedog’s comments above I do also feel that an active forum ought to be worthwhile. I’ve found that WA users are usually very willing to try to assist each other via existing forums so I think that the “designer community” could work well. Of course, evidenced by the lack of responses to this thread in the 3 months it’s been active, I could well be wrong :-)
One of my major difficulties is knowing what can/cannot be changed easily via the “Colors & Styles” route and what required delving into the CSS files. Customisation of the various themes is made difficult because there is not a great deal of consistency across themes which on the surface look similar to each other.
For example, in one theme I can quickly change the colour of the background of the page footer, in another I can’t so I have find out the Hex code of the colour I want to alter, access the CSS file and then search for the right occurrence of that colour code, capture the offending code and then paste it into my web site with the new colour. There can potentially be a lot of “suck it and see” going on.
Other things I have found when attempting to switch themes on an existing site emphasise the lack of consistency. At the moment I am trying to find out how to change the large green column under the menu down the left side of the “Modern Green 2” theme. I know the colour code but changing any of the three places that number occurs has no effect so I don’t know how that has been achieved.....
Similarly this theme has an image used for the “current selection” menu item, now how do I replace that without knowing its size? Really theme should not have these little idiosyncrasies, but the technique to achieve them if needed should be well documented.
In my experience, most organisations, having picked the most appropriate/appealing theme for their site, want to brand it in their own colours. I imagine that a great deal of site customisation consists of meeting this simple enough requirement. This could be quickly & easily improved by having consistent themes and better commented CSS files and as mentioned above: “if it has a colour –make it editable”.
The design of new site themes should always, always be performed bearing in mind that someone, somewhere will very soon want to change colours, fonts, sizes and in the case of functional pages, the text displayed.
Finally WRT scott_btm (point 3): You can edit your site as admin in firefox , and simultaneously review in IE 8 as a standard user. I use a dual-screen system which makes this much easier but is not essential.

Perhaps it would be useful if I explained the thinking behind our original request for enhancements to the event discount codes.
We are a chamber of commerce and as well as attracting new members and keeping existing members we do need to "incentivise" them to be active members and attend our networking and other events. To do this we have identified several approaches that event codes should be able to help us with.
(1) A Joining offer, e.g. offer "3 free events" to new members to encourage them to get involved in the Chamber from the start. Here we would like to be able to send a unique code to a new member as part of the joining sequence.
This would be valid for the full price of a specific sort of event and would be valid for say 3 or 4 months. It would be valid 3 times and the member should have some way of telling how many he has used/left.
(2) Offer an event "season ticket" so that we could offer things like "12 events for the price of 10".
Again this code would be valid for specific event types, be valid for say 12 months and would be unique to the purchaser.
This sort of thing would of course also need a way of being sold and the member would again need a way of knowing his "event balance".
(3) Have "single shot" unique codes that would be valid for one use only. These could be used as prizes or as special "thank you"s to members
(4) Offer a permanent discount to members of our executive committee or other special attendees.
This would be something like a 50% discount code but would only be visible to certain membership levels
