An error occurred while saving the comment Peter commentedWe have a similar related issue, admin approval applies in our case for "full membership" to give us a chance to check qualifications. We would like to encourage associate members to apply for full membership, but if we enable that option they can upgrade to full membership without admin approval, and we don't have a chance to verify their eligibility.
therefore on the renewal form we have the rather clumsy test "If you are an associate member and you would like to upgrade please email xyz@nzcine.com"
This is definitely not very smooth, and requires similar logic to Jack's issue.

An error occurred while saving the comment Peter commentedWhere a membership level requires admin approval it turns out is only applies to new brand memberships applications and does not apply to to lower level memberships who are applying for a more senior level of memberships.
This is illogical, because a low level member may easily and inappropriately upgrade themselves without approval, even though a new member is properly reviewed.
It's a gotcha that embarrassed me out with my board, after I said a level required admin approval, when it only does in a limited sense.

An error occurred while saving the comment Peter commented#5 especially! At the moment it is a clunky process of guessing, and doesn't allow thumbnails, which are visually really important.

I agree with the concept, but would much prefer to handle it as follows: If a membership lapses the next renewal date is set to one period from the date the membership lapsed. (not the date that the membership is reactivated)
In our case what happens at the moment is that some people wait until after their membership lapses and then renew. If this takes a while when they finally go and reactivate their membership, the new renewal date is one year from the date they reactivated not one year from the renewal date. This effectively gives them a holiday and there is an incentive to pay late and renew only when there is some exciting event coming up. We won't want to discourage them by asking for a late fee, after all, many of our members are freelancers and could be having a bad patch. But they they should pay their back dues, and this would be a way of doing that without making a big deal of it.
