We are a large ski club that sells lots of flight trips, with $250 deposit starting in July, then final payments starting in October (both payment in full and installments). Our solution for the deposit is to create multiple registration types (our trips have lots of options). The Advance Deposit registration type is Enabled in July. This allows us to capture money to boost our cash flow. Last year we had $18K in the bank by September! The other registration types are not Enabled until October, after we have gathered registration info from our participants. We then edit each participant who submitted a deposit, change their registration type from Advance Deposit to the correct registration type. This automatically updates their Invoice, and thus the participant sees his correct Balance Due. Usually only once Edit click per participant.

I am also interested in adding a second payment gateway, but for a couple of different reasons. We are the largest ski club in the country, with over 500 annual events, and 500 ski trip participants. Some of our trips can cost as much as $5K. Our requirements for these large $$$ events is much different than for our smaller events. For example, on our ski trips we collect a deposit up front, often up to 9 months prior to the actual trip. 90 days prior to the trip we collect the balance, and also offer a 3-payment installment plan. We can only implement this in WA through the use of manual invoicing methods. Stripe offers better functionality for these types of events than Paypal does.

We are also very unhappy with Paypal right now for arbitrarily blocking some of our members large credit card purchases, without proper notification. We would like to try Stripe, and at first just accept payments through their dashboard. After a "test drive" we might wish to convert to Stripe entirely.

Multiple payment gateways would allow us the flexibility to use different gateways for different events, and for larger transactions. It would also give us the flexibility to try different gateways before selecting a final solution.
